welcome
When applying for ReMarker editor-in-chief, the process is usually the same every year. The applicant submits a written application, laying out his goals and what he hopes to accomplish in the coming year. Another aspect is that our advisor — Mr. Westbrook — interviews each candidate.
In the interview, he asks why we love working on the newspaper. My two-word answer came incredibly easy: the relationships. Mr. Westbrook told me I gave an unconventional answer as most people would talk about the value of writing or designing. My answer, however, is one that I wholeheartedly believe in.
Whether the transgender woman who openly shared her life journey with me, the dozens of alumni I have reached out to for stories or the people on staff I get to work with each and every day, it's the relationships I have developed which fuel my passion as a journalist.
Creating meaningful connections with interview subjects, other staff members and our readers is what adds value to the countless hours I have spent studying journalism, researching topics, interviewing sources, writing stories, designing pages and handing out copies of The ReMarker.
While I have spent four years using journalism to strengthen many of my own relationships, I have also used the platform to create a deeper understanding between others. I view my role as editor-in-chief to go farther than just reporting the news; in order to resonate with our community, I strive to add humanity and depth to every topic that The ReMarker covers.
This website serves as a portfolio of my work and a demonstration of how journalism has influenced my life. Through all 11 aspects, it will show how I hope to make everyone's experience with The ReMarker a relational one.
